process
This is our submission to the
Ontario Long-Term Affordable Housing consultation process. The contents help
us, as Vincentians, to be aware of the issues related to
safe, affordable housing in Ontario and to speak with
confidence about such issues with relatives and friends.

Poor bashing
The papers recently had articles about
"waste & abuse" in the Ontario social assistance ("welfare")
fund. Those who relish every opportunity to claim
those living in poverty are lazy scammers jumped on these
stories as proof. Those who want to know the facts
behind the story
should read this. (pdf)
As Vincentians, we have a
responsibility to advocate for our neighbours in need and to
speak out against misinformation, misrepresentation, and
stereotyping.
Submission from TCC & Ontario Regional Council re. Bill 152
Bill 152 is the Ontario government's
draft legislation that will give authority to it's recently
announced Poverty Reduction Strategy. Since it is this
Bill that will hold them accountable for their promises and
plans, it is essential that it include the correct principles
and requirements.
The link below takes you to the joint
submission of Toronto Central Council & Ontario Regional
Council to the Government of Ontario as they consider final
changes to the Bill.

Breaking the Cycle: Ontario's Poverty Reduction Strategy
The long awaited plan has arrived.
Hundreds of charitable organizations cross the province,
individually and together (particularly the 25 in 5 coalition,
of which Toronto Central Council is a member) have worked hard
over the past year and longer to pressure the government
to put specific measures in place to reduce poverty and to
provide the government with some ways and means of achieving
this.
Although the plan offers great hope to
those in need, it lacks in specifics and, more importantly,
the financial commitment to make the plan a reality. It
relies heavily on Federal cooperation and history shows that
there is often more talk and promises than actual financial
assistance.
This is a time for some celebration and
hope, however. This plan is an important first step.
The coalition and individual voters need to continue the
pressure on the Ontario government to ensure it delivers on
its promises - not in spite of the current hard
economic times but partially because of them.
Let your MPP know you're pleased
with this first major step but that you're waiting to see how
the spring budget helps to make these commitments reality.
Ontario Government's Poverty Reduction Plan Announcement - 25
in 5 Tests
The 25 in 5 coalition of charitable
organizations (including TCC) and other organizations has been
actively lobbying the government over the past year. It
is expected that the Ontario government will unveil its
Poverty Reduction Plan on Thursday, December 4 and that many
of the 25 in 5 requests will be included.

An interesting and informative article on
why we, as practicing Catholics, are often slow to be aware of
